The Rural Life Museum features exhibits depicting the early life and culture of the region’s early settlers including a sizable William Barnhill collection of photographs of western North Carolina mountain life. Located on the Mars Hill College campus, the museum is housed in the Montague Building, a rock structure on the quad. The museum also hosts demonstrations of rural traditions and other educational programs.
